LEGEND
The Iron Wolf is a mythical character from a medieval legend about the founding of Vilnius, the capital of the ancient Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the modern capital of the Republic of Lithuania.
According to legend, Grand Duke Gediminas (c. 1275–1341) was hunting in a sacred forest near the Šventaragis Valley, near the place where the Vilnia River flows into the Neris River. Tired after a successful aurochs hunt, the Grand Duke settled down for the night. He fell asleep and dreamed of a huge Iron Wolf standing on a hill and howling as loudly and strongly as a hundred wolves. When the Duke woke up, he asked the kriv (pagan priest) Lizdeika to interpret the dream.
"So it is destined for the ruler and the state of Lithuania: The Iron Wolf symbolizes the castle and city that you will establish in this land."
"This city will be the capital of the Lithuanian lands and the residence of their rulers, and the glory of their deeds will echo throughout the world," the priest told him.
Therefore, Gediminas, obeying the will of the gods, built the city and named it Vilnius - after a stream on the Vilnia River.
